Use renewable energy to produce hot water.

The thermodynamic boiler (or thermodynamic water heater) is an innovative and sustainable solution for the production of domestic hot water. This system replaces the traditional electric water heater by combining the domestic hot water storage tank with a heat pump.

Adopting a combined system of a thermodynamic boiler and solar panels is a choice for energy efficiency and sustainable savings on your bills.

Combined with a photovoltaic installation, the thermodynamic boiler can increase your self-consumption by up to 15%.

How does a heat pump boiler work?

The thermodynamic boiler combines a hot water tank with a heat pump.

The heat pump uses ambient or outside air (1) to extract calories, which are transferred to a refrigerant gas. The cooled air is then expelled outside.

A compressor (2) compresses the heated gas, which increases its temperature even more. This hot gas will then transfer some of its energy to heat your domestic hot water (3).

The efficiency of a thermodynamic water heater is up to four times higher than that of a conventional electric boiler.

In addition, the thermodynamic boiler also has an additional electric element for very cold days or days of high consumption.

The thermodynamic boiler combines a hot water tank with a heat pump.

The main difference between an electric water heater and a thermodynamic water heater lies in the way in which each generates the heat needed to heat the water.

The normal electric water heater

Its source of energy is electricity. It uses electricity to heat water via an electrical element. This element is immersed directly in the tank and the water is heated directly.

For every 1 kWh of electricity consumed, approximately 1 kWh of thermal energy is transferred to the water.

The heat pump water heater

Its source of energy is electricity AND ambient air. It works like a heat pump, capturing calories from the air (indoors or outdoors) to heat water via a refrigeration circuit, then uses a compressor to increase the temperature and heat the water in the tank. This process is more energy efficient.

Pour 1 kWh d'électricité consommé, +- 3 kWh d'énergie thermique est transmise dans l'eau (COP = 3).

The main advantage of a thermodynamic boiler is precisely this thermodynamic cycle. An integrated heat pump captures the calories in the ambient air (indoors or outdoors), compresses them to increase their temperature, then transfers them to a water tank. This process heats the water efficiently while reducing electricity consumption compared to conventional water heaters, with four main advantages:

1. Energy saving: By using the free and renewable energy from the air, the thermodynamic boiler considerably reduces the electricity consumption normally required to heat domestic water, resulting in lower electricity bills.

2. Ecology: By exploiting a renewable energy source, namely the energy present naturally in the ambient air, the thermodynamic boiler encourages a more environmentally friendly mode of energy consumption.

3. Increased performance: Capable of functioning even at relatively low temperatures, this system ensures constant and reliable hot water production throughout the year.

4. Easy installation: Ideal for detached houses but also for flats, the thermodynamic water heater adapts to many housing configurations, new builds or renovations, and in most cases is very easy to install, without major work.

5. Rapid return on investment: You save up to 75% compared to a conventional boiler and your investment is paid back in 2 to 5 years.

In terms of water reserve capacity, thermodynamic boilers can be comparable to conventional water heaters, offering tanks of a similar size to meet household needs.

There are situations where thermodynamic boilers are not suitable. For example, homes with high water consumption needs (> 6 people or professional activity consuming hot water). In addition, the use of a sanitary loop with a thermodynamic water heater must be carefully considered as it is not always suitable.

Ideally, the thermodynamic boiler should be installed:

  • close to the departure point of the hot-water circuit
  • close to an outside wall
  • in an easily accessible room with sufficient ceiling height
What is the efficiency of a thermodynamic boiler?

The COP measures the efficiency of a device.

For thermodynamic boilers, depending on the outside air temperature, the COP varies between 3 and 4. This means that for every 1 kWh of electricity used, 3 to 4 kWh of thermal energy is recovered.
